Cozumel

Cozumel is an island just a few kilometers off the coast of “Playa del Carmen”. The around 78’000 inhabitants live off the tourism. There's no agriculture due to fact that the soil was once a coral reef, and electricity and food has to be shipped in from the mainland.

We went in a Tequileria, which obviously (and stereotypically) represents Mexico at it’s best. We learnt how it was made and drank some real tequila which actually tastes nothing like the commercial, cheap one we foreigners know.

We also learnt that you do not drink Tequila with salt and lemons. Mexicans would never do that. They drink it pure, no más!

We also learnt that the Mayan culture played a big role on this island (read more about the Mayan culture in my Costa Maya blog).

Obviously, being in Mexico you have to eat Mexican food. And it tastes delicious. You just can’t compare it to the Mexican food we eat back home.

Other things you can do on this Island is obviously enjoying the beach. The carribean island has some stunning white sand beaches and the sea has various blue tones that are incomparable with any other seas.

Cozumel also lays at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second biggest in the world after the Barrier Reef in Australia. Going for a snorkel or dive is spectacular. When doing this, you can spot some sea turtles which are actually at home on this island. Every year thousands of them come back to the beaches they were born at, to lay their eggs. Cozumel is home to 6 out of 7 marine sea turtles in the world.

To summarize the island: It might be tiny but has some amazing things to see and do!
