Costa Maya

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

Do you know who invented the chocolate? No it was not the Swiss (I wish), it was the Mayans. For the Mayans, the cacao trees were sacred. The cacao beens were offered from the gods, for the men to be more godlike. They drank the cacao mixed with spices, water and human blood. This drink gave them supernatural power. We could drink this ourselves (don’t worry, the blood was substituted with paprica).

It isn’t sweet at all like we know it today. Only when the Spanish came, they added some honey to make it sweeter because they did not like it. The Spanish brought the cacao then to Europe where it was finally created into the chocolate we know now (yes, now the Swiss came and added milk and made it melt in your mouth- at least that).

Besides the chocolate, Costa Maya has Mayan ruins you can visit and learn more about their history. I am not going to explain it all to you, no need for a book. But google it, the Mayan culture was highly developed and very sophisticated.

Anyways, if you’re not the type of person that’s into history, there are beautiful Carribean beaches waiting for you. Palm trees on white sand and warm, crystal clear water invite you to stay there.

We also went snorkeling which was an amazing experience. The Mesoamerican Barrier reef, the second biggest in the world, is right outside of the coast. The one to three meter deep water is home to corals, fish, sea turtles, stingrays and so on. You can see them all when snorkeling!

Costa Maya is definitely worth a visit. It’s culture is extraordinary and it’s nature astonishing!
