The Bernese Oberland (German: Berneroberland) is the alpine area of the Canton of Bern, the second biggest Canton (more a less like a US State) in Switzerland.
It's beautiful, cristal clear and turquoise colored lakes like Lake Brienz, Lake Thun or the smaller Lake Blausee are inviting you to go for a swim or hike in summer, and of course to take stunningly beautiful photos.
In winter you can go to one of countless skiresorts. Just to number a few:
Gstaad is a hotspot for the rich and VIPs, Wengen hosts the worlds longest downhill ski race and Adelboden hosts one of the worlds most difficult Giant slalom ski races.
But obviously, these romantical and traditional looking villages are open to everyone, you don't need to be rich nor knowing how to ski or snowborad. Just stroll along the snowy towns, do some shopping, stop for a hot chocolate and take in those beautiful views.
Probably the most famous towns amongst travelers and tourists are Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren. Watch the countless waterfalls, stroll around town and take a look at those typical swiss chalets, with the alps in the background.
And if you're not into relaxing, do some paragliding, sky diving, river rafting, skiing or snowbaording. Or just hike up to a mountain top!
As I mentioned, the Bernese Oberland is situated in the Swiss alps. The infamous and impressive mountains "Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau" were unreachable for people during centuries. Today, you can visit the "Top of Europe" on top of the Jungfrau mountain. It is called like that because at 3,454 meters above sea-level it is the highest train station in Europe. Breathtaking views are certain!
Because of all those reasons, but also the friendly people from Bern, the traditional and delicious Swiss cuisine and the typical marvellous swiss towns, it is one of my favorite area to go to in Switzerland.
